PHP2Shell Security Alert: Is Your WordPress Website Safe

Website security is in the news again. A recently disclosed security issue known as PHP2Shell has raised concerns for website owners, hosting providers, and developers around the world.

The issue involves two critical vulnerabilities in PHP, the programming language used by WordPress and many other website platforms. Under certain conditions, an attacker could exploit a vulnerable PHP installation to run unauthorized commands on a server without logging in first.

If you own a WordPress website, you may be wondering whether your website is affected, whether your hosting company has fixed the issue, and what you need to do next.

Let’s explain everything in simple language.

What is the PHP2Shell security issue?

PHP is a programming language that runs behind the scenes of many websites. When someone visits a WordPress website, PHP helps load pages, process forms, retrieve information from the database, and perform other tasks.

PHP2Shell refers to two critical security vulnerabilities identified as:

  • CVE-2026-109618
  • CVE-2026-109619

Both vulnerabilities received a critical severity score of 9.2 out of 10 under CVSS v4.0. Depending on the server configuration and conditions, they can potentially allow an attacker to execute code on a vulnerable server without authentication.

In simple terms, imagine your website server as an office building. PHP is one of the systems that helps the office function. These vulnerabilities could give an attacker a way to interfere with that system without going through the normal login process.

If successfully exploited, the impact could include unauthorized file changes, website disruption, or access to sensitive information, depending on the attack and server environment.

This does not mean every PHP website has been hacked. It means website owners and hosting providers should identify vulnerable installations and apply the appropriate security updates.

Is WordPress affected by PHP2Shell?

Yes, WordPress websites can be at risk if they run on a vulnerable PHP installation. However, this does not mean WordPress itself is inherently insecure.

WordPress uses PHP to operate, so a vulnerability in the PHP runtime can affect a WordPress website even when WordPress core, themes, and plugins are fully updated.

This distinction is important.

WordPress security depends on several components working together:

  • WordPress core software
  • Themes and plugins
  • The PHP version running on the server
  • Web server and hosting configuration
  • Administrator accounts and passwords
  • File permissions, backups, and security monitoring

Keeping WordPress updated is essential, but it cannot fix a vulnerability in the underlying PHP runtime.

Similarly, updating PHP alone does not guarantee that a website is free from malware or other security problems.

A secure website needs attention at both the application level and the server level.

Which PHP versions are affected?

The PHP project released security updates for the following branches on October 21, 2026. Versions earlier than the listed fixed releases are affected by these vulnerabilities, subject to vendor-specific patches and configurations.

PHP branch Fixed version
PHP 8.5 8.5.12
PHP 8.4 8.4.27
PHP 8.3 8.3.36
PHP 8.2 8.2.35

If your hosting account uses one of these branches, check that the installed version includes the security fixes.

Important: PHP 8.1 and older versions require additional attention because they are outside normal upstream support. Some hosting providers and operating system vendors may supply backported security patches, so do not assume that the displayed version number alone tells you whether a fix is present. Ask your hosting provider to confirm the status.

Also, do not assume that simply selecting the newest available PHP version in your hosting panel is the correct solution. Check that your WordPress website, themes, and plugins are compatible before making a major version change.

How to check whether your WordPress website is protected

If you own a business website, you do not need to understand the technical details of PHP to take the first steps.

How to check WordPress website security, PHP updates, plugins, suspicious files, and backups

1. Check the PHP version

Log in to your hosting control panel and look for a section called PHP Selector, MultiPHP Manager, or PHP Configuration. The name depends on your hosting provider.

Find the PHP version assigned to your website.

For example, seeing PHP 8.3 does not automatically mean your website is protected. You need to check the exact installed version and confirm that the relevant security fixes have been applied.

If you cannot find this information, ask your hosting provider:

“Can you please confirm whether the PHP2Shell vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, have been patched for my website’s PHP installation?”

This is a simple way to get a clear answer without having to manage the server yourself.

2. Confirm that the server has been patched

Changing a PHP version in your hosting panel and patching the underlying server are related but not always identical tasks.

On managed hosting, the provider may handle security updates automatically. On other hosting plans, you or your developer may need to take action.

Ask your hosting provider to confirm:

  • Which PHP version your website is running.
  • Whether the security fixes for both vulnerabilities are installed.
  • Whether the relevant PHP workers or services have been restarted where required.
  • Whether any additional action is needed for your hosting environment.

Do not rely only on a hosting panel showing that a PHP version is available. What matters is whether the website is actually running a patched installation.

3. Keep WordPress, themes, and plugins updated

Although this particular issue affects PHP, outdated WordPress software can introduce separate security risks.

Update WordPress core, themes, and plugins after checking compatibility and taking an appropriate backup.

Remove themes and plugins that are no longer needed, especially abandoned software that no longer receives security updates.

However, remember that updating WordPress plugins does not replace the need to patch PHP.

4. Check for suspicious files and unexpected changes

If your website has been running a vulnerable PHP installation, updating it is an important first step. It is also sensible to check for signs of a possible compromise.

Look for:

  • Unexpected PHP files in upload folders or other directories where they do not belong.
  • Unknown administrator accounts.
  • Changes to website files that you cannot explain.
  • Unexpected redirects to unrelated websites.
  • Spam links or unfamiliar content appearing on your pages.
  • Unusual server activity or security alerts.

These signs do not automatically prove that PHP2Shell was exploited. They can have other causes, too.

Likewise, a website that looks normal in a browser is not necessarily clean. Some malicious code operates in the background or only affects certain visitors.

If you suspect a compromise, preserve relevant logs and backups, investigate the cause, and remove any confirmed malicious files or access mechanisms. Simply deleting a suspicious file without checking how it appeared may leave the underlying problem unresolved.

5. Make sure you have a working backup

A recent backup can help you recover if your website is damaged or compromised.

Check that your backups include the website files and database, and that you know how to restore them.

Where possible, keep a copy separate from the live hosting account. If an attacker gains access to your hosting account, backups stored only in that account may also be at risk.

Do not restore an old backup over a compromised website without first understanding when the compromise occurred. Otherwise, you may restore the same malicious code.

Can hackers install a PHP shell on a WordPress website?

Yes, attackers can use different methods to place malicious PHP files on a compromised website. These files are often called web shells.

A web shell is a malicious script that can provide an attacker with a way to interact with a server or execute commands, depending on its permissions and functionality.

The term PHP2Shell, however, refers specifically to the newly disclosed PHP vulnerabilities discussed in this article. It should not be confused with every PHP web shell found during a malware scan.

An attacker might attempt to use a web shell to:

  • Access or modify website files.
  • Upload additional malicious code.
  • Steal information accessible to the compromised process.
  • Redirect visitors or inject spam.
  • Maintain unauthorized access to the website.

A successful attack against the server does not necessarily give an attacker unlimited control over every account on that server. The impact depends on the server’s permissions, isolation, configuration, and other security controls.

This is one reason why server security matters alongside WordPress security.

Does this mean WordPress is not secure?

No. It is important not to draw that conclusion from a PHP vulnerability.

WordPress is widely used, and its security depends on how it is maintained and hosted. Like other software platforms, it relies on underlying technologies that may occasionally require urgent security updates.

A vulnerability in PHP does not automatically mean that WordPress core has a security flaw.

Consider three separate situations:

  • An updated WordPress website running vulnerable PHP: The website may still be exposed to the PHP vulnerability even if its plugins and themes are current.
  • A website running patched PHP but outdated plugins: The PHP issue may be addressed, but the website can still face other security risks.
  • A website with updated software and proper server security: Its risk is reduced, although no website can be guaranteed completely immune to attacks.

The right response is not to panic or abandon WordPress. It is to maintain every layer of the website and respond to security advisories promptly.

What should you do if your hosting provider has not patched PHP?

Treat this as a priority.

First, contact the hosting provider and ask for an update on the PHP2Shell security fixes. If the provider cannot patch the affected installation promptly, ask what temporary protection is available and whether the website can be isolated from public access until the issue is addressed.

Security advisories recommend applying the appropriate fixes as soon as possible. Temporary workarounds may reduce exposure, but they should not be treated as a complete replacement for patching.

If you manage your own server, have a qualified administrator review the applicable PHP advisory, identify every affected installation, apply the correct vendor-supported updates, and verify the result.

Do not copy random configuration changes or security commands from online discussions into a production server without understanding their impact. An incorrect change can break website functionality or leave the server exposed.

If your website is business-critical and you cannot confirm that it is protected, get help from someone who can check both the PHP environment and the website itself.

How Come2theweb can help with WordPress security

At Come2theweb, we understand that most business owners want their websites to work properly. They do not necessarily have the time or technical knowledge to investigate PHP vulnerabilities, hosting configurations, suspicious files, and WordPress security issues themselves.

Our WordPress Security & Malware Fix Services help website owners address website security problems, investigate suspicious activity, and work toward a safer, more reliable website.

Depending on the issue, support may include:

  • Checking WordPress core, theme, and plugin updates.
  • Reviewing suspicious files and possible malware infections.
  • Helping investigate unexpected redirects, spam links, and other unusual website behavior.
  • Reviewing PHP version and hosting-related security concerns.
  • Assisting with malware cleanup and recovery.
  • Recommending practical steps to reduce the risk of future problems.

The right solution depends on the website and its hosting environment. A PHP vulnerability requires the relevant server-level security fix, while a malware infection may require a separate investigation and cleanup.

Final thoughts

The PHP2Shell security issue is a reminder that website security involves more than installing WordPress updates or adding a security plugin.

The PHP runtime, hosting configuration, website software, administrator access, and backups all play a role in keeping a website secure.

If you manage a WordPress website, check your PHP version, confirm that the appropriate security patches are installed, keep your software updated, and investigate any unusual website activity.

Most importantly, do not assume that your website has been hacked simply because it uses PHP. Take the advisory seriously, verify your security status, and address any gaps promptly.

A well-maintained WordPress website can remain a practical and secure platform for a business, provided its software and hosting environment receive the attention they need.
